Every year it comes down to cash. The teenagers want it, the college kid needs it, and nobody in the history of Christmas has ever been disappointed by money. The trouble is the envelope. It gets opened in two seconds, set down somewhere, and forgotten before dessert.

This one doesn't disappear. The rolled bills tuck into a ring of openings around the base and stand upright in a full circle, and a hand-painted elf sits on top, perched on a wrapped gift box with striped socks and pointy shoes dangling over the edge. Two to choose from. The girl elf with her braids and red-trimmed hat over a teal package. The boy elf in green with a red package under him. Both wear that slightly mischievous elf expression that gets a laugh before anyone reaches for a single bill.

Set it on the mantel with the stockings or under the tree with the wrapped gifts. It holds its own instead of vanishing into the pile of cards nobody remembers by New Year's.

Cut from 1/8 inch premium Baltic birch and hand-painted in our family workshop, one at a time. Slight variations are part of what makes it handmade.
